5 Common Environmental Toxins

Updated: Mar 8, 2020

Are you making changes but still feeling fatigued, anxious, irritable, inflammation, cravings, poor concentration, injuries, mood swings or other symptoms? Environmental toxins may be an underlying cause, as chemicals, even small exposures, add up quickly creating a burden on your health.

See below for 5 common exposures most people aren't aware they're being exposed to that may be impacting your health and wellness goals.

1. Arsenic- Can usually be found in drinking water, rice and rice products, chicken and playground equipment. Simple ways to minimize exposure would be soaking rice before cooking, and also cooking with extra water and draining it has shown to minimize arsenic levels. Using a good water filter for any water you drink or cook with to minimize levels. 2. Lead- Can usually be found in contaminated water, plumbing, toys, house dust and vinyl flooring. Ways to reduce exposure would be removing your shoes before entering your home, using a good water filter that removes heavy metals and keeping floors and blinds cleaned regularly. 3. Pthalates- This is often found in personal and household care items, nail polishes, house dust, shower curtains, scented candles and air fresheners. Reduce exposure by switching out all cleaning and personal care products with ones containing natural ingredients, checking the EWG website for hidden ingredients and reducing use of plastics in the home and work place.

4. BPA and replacement chemicals-

Used in the making of many plastics, cash register receipts, reusable water bottles and canned goods.

You can minimize exposure by switching out all plastics with glass or stainless steel, use frozen or fresh items over canned and avoid long term touching of cash register receipts making sure to wash your hands after contact.

5. Methylmercury-

Can be found in dental amalgams, seafood, air pollution and fluorescent light bulbs when broken.

You can minimize exposure by having any mercury amalgams removed by a qualified dentist, eating wild caught seafood and those of smaller size, and safely replacing any fluorescent bulbs.

These 5 common toxins are just a starting point, there are many other recognized harmful chemicals we are all exposed to, but are able to minimize in our daily lives. All these toxins add up and can be attributed to chronic diseases, tremors, neurotoxicity, memory loss, miscarriage, autoimmune diseases, thyroid disease, hormonal imbalance, headaches, fatigue, cancer, ADHD, weight gain and many others.
